How to prepare Italian Caprese salad: ingredients

When dealing with such simple dishes, the ingredients make all the difference.

To prepare a perfect Caprese salad, it is essential to choose fresh and high-quality ingredients. Here is what you need:

  • Not overly ripe tomatoes: preferably varieties such as beef heart, San Marzano salad tomatoes, beefsteak tomatoes, ribbed tomatoes (also known as Florentine tomatoes), and cluster round tomatoes;
  • Buffalo mozzarella: ensure it is fresh and of excellent quality;
  • Fresh basil: with large and fragrant leaves;
  • Extra virgin olive oil: a good quality EVO oil will make a difference;
  • Salt and pepper: to taste.

Procedure

  1. Prepare the ingredients: thoroughly wash the tomatoes and basil with cold running water. Slice the tomatoes about half a centimeter thick. Drain the buffalo mozzarella and cut it into slices of the same thickness as the tomato slices.
     
  2. Assemble the dish: on a serving plate, alternate layers of tomato and mozzarella slices, arranging them in a circular or linear fashion, as you prefer. Then, insert basil leaves between each slice.
     
  3. Dress: drizzle some extra virgin olive oil over the salad and add a pinch of salt and pepper.
     
  4. Serve immediately: Caprese salad is perfect when served immediately to maintain the freshness and crispness of the ingredients.

Tips and Variations for Caprese Salad

  • Arugula and oregano: you can also add arugula leaves and/or oregano to the Caprese salad if it suits your taste.
  • Varieties of tomatoes: you can experiment with different varieties of tomatoes, such as cherry tomatoes or datterini tomatoes, to add a touch of sweetness.
  • Balsamic vinegar: for a richer flavor, you can add a few drops of traditional Modena balsamic vinegar.
  • Presentation: for an elegant touch, you can serve the Caprese salad in clear glasses, alternating layers of tomato, mozzarella, and basil.
