How to Clean Your Washing Machine: An Essential Guide to Keep Your Machine in Perfect Condition.

The washing machine is one of the most used and important appliances in every home. It not only helps to keep our clothes clean but also contributes to our daily hygiene.

However, to ensure that it operates efficiently and safely, it is essential to keep it clean and in good condition.

In this article, we will discover how to properly clean the washing machine, preserving its efficiency and extending its lifespan.

Why is it important to clean the washing machine?

Before we delve into the details on how to clean the washing machine, it is essential to understand why appliance maintenance is so important.

Over time, residues from detergent, fabric softener, limescale, and dirt from fabrics can accumulate inside the machine.

These residues can not only cause bad odors but can also reduce the efficiency of the machine and, in severe cases, lead to mechanical failures.

Cleaning Frequency

It is recommended to clean the washing machine thoroughly at least once a month.

However, this can vary depending on usage and the quality of the water supply (the harder the water, the more frequently you might need to descale the machine).

Required Materials

  • White vinegar or cleaning vinegar
  • Baking soda
  • Soft bristle brush or sponge
  • Microfiber cloth

Steps for Cleaning the Washing Machine

  1. Cleaning the Basket

Remove all clothes from the basket. Set the washing machine to a hot cycle and add two cups of white vinegar. Let the machine complete the cycle. The vinegar will help remove soap and limescale residues and disinfect the basket.

  2. Cleaning the Gasket

The gasket, the rubber edge that seals the door, is a common hiding place for mold and residues. Use a solution of hot water and vinegar (50/50) and a soft bristle brush to thoroughly clean the gasket. Make sure to lift or fold the gasket to clean underneath it as well.

  3. Cleaning the Filter

Consult your washing machine's manual to locate and remove the filter. Generally, it is located at the front lower part of the machine. Remove it and clean it under running water. Check for debris or foreign objects and remove them.

  4. Cleaning the Detergent Dispenser

Pull out the detergent drawer and soak it in a solution of hot water and vinegar. With a sponge, remove any detergent and fabric softener residues. Also clean the inside of the drawer compartment in the washing machine.

  5. Final Rinse Cycle (Empty Wash)

After cleaning the separate parts, run a washing cycle without clothes to remove any vinegar and baking soda residues. You can add a cup of baking soda to the basket before starting the cycle for additional cleaning and freshness.

 Tips for Regular Maintenance

  • Leave the washing machine door open after each use to allow moisture to evaporate and prevent mold formation.
  • Regularly check the condition of the gaskets and hoses.
  • Use the recommended amount of detergent to avoid excessive soap residues.
  • You can use coarse salt to eliminate limescale and bad odors.

By following these simple steps, not only will you keep your washing machine clean and fresh, but you will also help improve its efficiency and longevity.

Regular care is the key to ensuring that your washing machine continues to operate at its best for years to come.
