Upcycling refers to the creation of new objects to be placed on the market using waste materials destined to become waste.

Unlike the simple recycling (through which a material is brought back to its initial conditions to face a new life cycle) and downcycling, upcycling adds originality in creating more attractive goods (in design and characteristics) to consumers who they have a value (real or perceived as such) greater than that of the initial materials from which they are created.

The upcycling phenomenon, whose name was coined in the early 90s by a German engineer, is depopulating not only in the world of designers and industries, but also among ordinary people who, in an increasingly massive way, re-invent your way of dressing or your home with unique and original creations.

Examples of upcycling can be found in the field of furniture by transforming old furniture or wooden boxes into other original objects for the home and in the field of fashion in which new forms of clothing are created, always characterized by the uniqueness of the product.

Upcycling is not synonymous with vintage as the final product does not necessarily have the same function as the product from which it started, but with vintage it shares the concept of "no waste" and therefore of sustainability.

World Recycling Day is celebrated on March 18, established to emphasize the importance of this practice for environmental sustainability and the fight against climate change according to the circular economy model.
